The Rocks, Sailor's Home

The former Sailor's Home is located along George Street at The Rocks. The original block was designed by Weaver & Kemp and built in 1864 in the Victorian Italianate architectural style, as cheap, clean accommodation for sailors. The streetfront block seen here was designed by Spain & Cosh and built in 1926 in the Inter-War Free Classical architectural style. A continuous parapet in Classical Revival style links the blocks. It hosted sailors until the 1970s and is now the Billich Gallery and a restaurant. The previous colour scheme of the facade can be seen here.

Darlinghurst, cafe

This former corner shop with residence above is located on the corner of Liverpool Street and Bourke Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. The building has been redeveloped with an extension behind the shop and an additional two floors added above for apartments. The shop on the corner is now The Mayflower cafe,

Pyrmont, Harlequin Inn

 

The Harlequin Inn is located on the corner of Ultimo Road and Harris Street, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. This pub was built in the 1880s and was formerly known as the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel until it was renamed in the 1990s. It is known as a rugby union and sporting pub, which is why there is a giant rugby union ball on the awning.

Dulwich Hill, apartments


This commercial and residential building is located on the corner of Wardell Road and Ewart Street, in the inner west suburb of Dulwich Hill. 'Nea Zoi' was built in 2019 with shops on the ground floor and apartments above. This photo was taken a couple of years ago when Alevri, a Greek cafe and bakery was operating on the corner.

Rockdale, Gujaga Park, sculpture


This sculpture is located in a garden bed in Gujaga Park, along West Botany Street in the southern suburb of Rockdale. The duck is one of five large animal sculptures carved from sandstone.

Sydney Arcade, Lego Megastore

 
The Lego Megastore is at the Pitt Street entrance of Sydney Arcade. The 'Rainbow Gum Tree' built with 183,394 bricks, is a model of a eucalyptus tree with native Australian animals: a cockatoo, koala and kookaburra.

Rookwood, sculpture


This sculpture stands outside the Eternal Rest Complex, a chapel on the corner of Barnet Avenue and Haslem Drive, in Rookwood Cemetery in the western suburb of Rookwood. "Victory" is a sculpture of Jesus Christ created by Linda Karfeld and dedicated in 2004.

Haymarket, Market City

Market City is located along Hay Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. This complex contains a produce and flea market known as Paddy's Markets on the ground floor, the Market City shopping centre on three levels above, and a skyscraper apartment building called The Peak. The Vegetable Market building was built in 1909 in the Edwardian style with the façade preserved and restored in the 1980 redevelopment. A tram has stopped at the Paddy's Markets Light Rail Stop, which is on the Central to Dulwich Hill line of the Sydney Light Rail Network.

Haymarket, Station House

 
'Station House' is a heritage listed commercial building located on the corner of George Street and Rawson Place, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It was designed by Ernest Lindsay Thompson and built in 1915 in the Federation Free Classical in style with Chicaoesque design elements. It was an investment property for Reuben Gardiner, a boot and shoe manufacturer who traded under the name of 'Joe Gardiner'. The building was occupied by the Station House Cafe and mixed commercial tenancies, including the Master Butchers Association, the Hellenic Philodramatic Society, the National Irish Association and Alfred Croaker and Daughters World's Lolly instructors who were chocolate and lolly makers. It is now home to a backpackers hotel and on the ground floor a travel agency and a takeaway kebab shop.

Christ Church St Laurence is an Anglican church located along George Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. This heritage listed church was built in 1845 and designed by Henry Robertson and Edmund Blacket in the Old Colonial Gothick Picturesque and Victorian Free Gothic styles.

Pitt Street, Sugar House

 
This heritage listed building was built on the site of Sydney's first sugar exchange, on the corner of Pitt Street and King Street. It was built in 1879 in the Victorian Italianate style as a hotel for Sydney businessman, William Mears. It was first managed by Edward Trickett, a world champion sculler, and known as "Trickett's Hotel", later renamed "Kings Hotel". It was adapted to commercial use after its closure and renamed "Sugar House" with various tenants. It was restored and redeveloped in 2023 to become a Ralph Lauren boutique over four floors and a private rooftop.

Hyde Park, Busby’s Bore Fountain

The Busby’s Bore Fountain is located in northwest corner of Hyde Park North. It was designed by John Byrom and installed in 1962 to commemorate the Busby Bore, a tunnel built to bring water from the Lachlan Swamp (now Busby's Pond in Centennial Park) to Hyde Park. John Busby, a mineral surveyor and civil engineer identified the Lachlan Swamp as a potential source of water for the city after completing a survey of existing and potential sources of water in 1825.

Cahill Expressway, Sydney Harbour

Looking across the Cahill Expressway above Circular Quay Railway Station to Sydney Harbour. A cruise ship is moored at the Overseas Passenger Terminal and another is almost passing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. A number of ferries are arriving and departing from the Circular Quay Ferry Wharves. This view is from the balcony at Cafe Sydney, which is a rooftop restaurant in Customs House at Circular Quay.
